If I lived near the seashore
I would walk into the ocean
I would not come back.

I would wait until summer
when the water was hot
so I wouldn't have to feel
or even know if I had died.

And there in the waves I would take my chance,
like so many mermaids
as to whether we have souls
and if so what will happen to them.

I know that you won't mind.

Whenever I think everything is absolutely irreversibly horrible, something happens-- the sky with chips of glimmering cloud, the smell of summer grass, the dizzy flight of spinning birds. It may take me a while to get used to being an adult. No one could really force me to get younger, but it still feels like a privilege. I feel happy that I get to decide what to eat, what to wear, when to go to bed.
