I'd suggest just reformat it and install Windows on it if you can.
I'm fairly sure Ubuntu for Dummies is available. Good luck.
Xchat is typically recommended for Linux IRC. I know a lot of people that use Irssi, but that's entirely text based and also hard to adjust to if you don't want it. Other alternatives are ChatZilla which I think a good number of people use in chan, or BitchX which just has a funny name and I don't know much beyond that.
J'refuse. My Laptop won't let me install XP on it, so if I'm going with Windows, Vista is my only choice. And. No. I'm going to wrestle with it for a few days before I crawl back to Microsoft in shame.
second, I managed to help get vista off ronan's, but. it involved reformatting which could suck if you don't have the drivers. :( if you do I can go try to figure out what we did for hers, but. yeah, it's. kind of incredibly shitty and ridiculously hard to remove.
I had a guy I found of craigslist doing most of the work for me. He knows a bit more than I do about computers, but not like... a super ton more? So I don't know if he really was cockblocked or he just didn't know what he was doing. It was just above my skill level enough that I didn't know what he was doing. I'm not sure if the hard drive was reformatted or not. And we're already fucked driver-wise. The graphics and audio cards work, but not the wireless, lol forever. :(
