Chapter 4 The blonde just stood there in shock, unable to speak until the Master got up from where he was sitting across the table from the trio that was now his as the Doctor, Jack, and Martha stood as well, all staring at Rose.
"And here she is, the woman of the hour," the insane Time Lord said, walking over towards Rose to escort her to the table. "Sleep well, my little rosebud? Did UNIT treat you well?" he asked, placing a hand on her bare shoulder.
"Sod off, Egotistical," Rose hissed between clenched teeth. "Unless you'd like another slap to the face, I suggest you get your hand off of me."
The Doctor chuckled to himself, and Jack grinned at the blonde, as both men walked around the table to her with Martha sitting back down, a bit jealous that this girl who couldn't have been any older than she had captured the attention of the Time Lord and immortal man.
The Master stepped back, removing his hand from the blonde's shoulder not wanting to get hit again, but kept watch over the happy reunion between his enemies and Rose. His eyes locked with the Doctor's as they approached her, the saner of the two Time Lords finally breaking the gaze when both he and Jack stopped in front of Rose and looked at her, the blonde returning their looks.
"Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth," the Doctor said, greeting the blonde by the title that he had given her the last time they saw one another on Bad Wolf Bay. He grinned at her - she looked so different; so confident in her stance.
A bright grin broke out on Rose's face. "Doctor," she said before the Time Lord pulled her into a warm embrace. "It's good to see you," she mentioned softly.
"You too, Rose. You too," he said.
Jack stood over to the side, letting them reunite. It had been a rough rest of the night and part of the day for them, and he didn't want to interrupt. But when they held onto one another for what seemed like an eternity when it was only a few minutes, the immortal man decided it was time to cut in.
"Doc, I don't want to take all the fun out of you two being reunited, but let other people say hello, too," he said a bit cheekily.
The Doctor rubbed Rose's shoulders once before letting go of the blonde before she turned, her brown eyes looking up at Jack, the grin never once leaving her face. It had seemed like ages ago since she had seen him, both of them, and to be reunited with the two men gave her a sense of hope; a sense of security, to know that she wouldn’t be alone here.
"Jack," Rose started. "How? I thought you were dead," she continued, shaking her head. "Never mind that. It's good to see you."
The immortal man chuckled. "It's good to see you too, Rose," Jack said, easily pulling her into another embrace. "Because of you, I have another chance at life. But it's forever," he whispered in her ear.
A puzzled expression appeared on the blonde's features, overcoming the grin as she pulled away a little bit. "Forever?"
He nodded a bit, releasing her. "Remember that time on the Game Station with Lynda?" Jack asked before going on. "You made me immortal."
"Because of the Bad Wolf," she stated.
"Yes, you were brilliant," the immortal stated, giving his friend a slight smile.
The Master stood in the background; his hands stuffed in his trouser pockets, listening to the three carry on their conversation. It was then that he realized who he was, indeed, dealing with. The one companion of the Doctor's that could look into the time vortex; the one that turned Jack into the freak now was - and her name was Rose.
"Rose, I have someone I want you to meet," the Doctor said. "Her name's Martha."
The blonde's heart sank as the Time Lord spoke, brushing past both men and walking a bit towards the table before turning around. "So you just replaced me, then? Is that it? I was trapped in the parallel universe with you haunting my every dream until I finally see you again only to find out you replaced me?!" Rose questioned, turning to face the table once again and sitting down in the chair that the Master had been occupying.
Martha looked at Rose. "I've hardly replaced you, you know. If anything, I've been living in your blonde shadow. All the time it's been 'Rose would know what to do' and 'Rose would have done things this way'," she said gently. "You don't have to worry about me replacing you. I don't think that the Doctor could ever do that."
It was Rose’s turn to look at the other girl that was in the room, and shook her head. "You don't even know what I've been through to get here," she said coldly, her voice filled with hurt; her eyes threatening to let the tears that were starting to well up in her brown eyes escape. "You don't know what I've done."
The young black haired woman could only imagine what the other went through, and didn’t press the issue. "I'm Martha Jones," she said, formally introducing herself, a slight, soft smile appearing on her face.
Brown eyes blinked, and a hand reached up to wipe away what little tears had been loose from her face. She saw Martha's face, that soft smile. Rose realized that she shouldn't have been jealous of her. They were all trapped as prisoners on this ship with the Master as their captain. "I guess you already know who I am," she said with a slight chuckle. "Rose Tyler. It's nice to meet you, Martha."
"Nice to meet you too, Rose," Martha said, watching as Jack and the Doctor moved forward and sat down in their respective chairs while Rose picked up a small, silver instrument that was in front of her, handling it as if it were the Doctor’s sonic screwdriver.
Jack was the first one to speak up after they got settled back down. "That right there Rose, what you're holding is his laser screwdriver," he started. "It's like the Doctor's sonic one, except his is apparently its set to kill."
Rose looked at the immortal man, her head tilting slightly to the side as she set the device back down on the table. "Did he...kill you?" she asked in a low voice.
The immortal gave the blonde a look - one that could only be described as 'well it sure didn't tickle' before answering her question. "Yes."
The Master was the last to join the quartet, bringing forward a silver metal briefcase that contained the one thing that would have all of the Earth bowing down to him - the Doctor's severed hand. "And now for an added bonus," he started, picking up the laser screwdriver and setting the case down before leaning over the table towards where the other Time Lord sat. "Memory lane. Remember Professor Lazarus and his genetic manipulation device? Did you think little Tish got that job merely by coincidence?"
The Doctor had a disbelieving look on his face, but said nothing as the Master went on.
"I've been laying traps for you all this time. And if I could concentrate all that technology into one little screwdriver..." the insane Time Lord said, holding up his device. "But if only I had the Doctor’s biological code. Oh, wait a minute. I do!" he said with a snap of his fingers, standing straight up heading to where the case was and opened it. "I've got his hand. And if Lazarus made himself younger, what if I reverse it? Another...hundred years?"
Jack looked at Martha, handing her his vortex manipulator. "Teleport yourself back, you got to get out of here."
Martha glanced at the device before looking at Rose, then back to Jack. "What about Rose?"
"Save yourself, Martha. I've been up against worse," the blonde said firmly. "Besides, I worked for Torchwood."
The other Time Lord stood up when the Master aimed his laser screwdriver at him, letting his body age against his will, and knowing that nothing could be done to stop it. When the process was over, the Doctor was on the ground as an old man, with both Martha and Rose on either side.
"What did you do to him?!" Rose shouted, demanding an answer. "Turn him back right now!"
The Master smirked. "I wouldn't change him back for anything now."
Several Toclafane appeared, circling over where they were. "Is it time? Is it ready?" a male voice asked.
"Is the machine singing?" another questioned, this time a female voice.
The insane Time Lord nodded, and went to the nearest window, watching as the skies ripped open and six billion Toclafane came bursting out of it.
"Down you go, kids! Remove one-tenth of the population!"
Tears easily strolled down Rose's and Martha's cheeks, the Doctor holding onto one of their hands. Martha slowly let go and backed away from them before looking at Jack's, Rose's, and the Doctor's faces, then disappearing from the ship.
It was then, that the Doctor lifted his head and faced Jack, with the blonde looking between the two men. Rose was their only hope on board this ship, and Martha was their only hope on Earth.
