Indeed. I thought that everyone was doing this independently, but if it took the place of Social Security, then that would make it more effective. I hadn't actually heard of this as a formal Government idea, but I like it.

Yeah, so I told my parents what I heard and what I thought, and lo and behold I'm only allowed to be free thinking if I freely decide to agree with them. :)

I don't know if I put this in my post, but here's the statistic: make $35,000 a year, put the normal Social Security contribution into your retirement fund, retire at 55 as a millionaire. Obviously, if you intend to make more than $35,000 a year or retire later, this amount goes up by a staggering amount.

Good to hear from you again.

I've beaten more than my share of horses. It was more striking in your comment's context, anyway.

A monumentally bad idea. Many, many elderly Americans rely on social security for their wellbeing, and a collapse of the market would irreconcilably push them into poverty. Further, the plan is classist and elitist, as highly educated, already wealthier individuals will be better prepared and able to manage their accounts, along with having greater access to sound financial planning adivce. Social security has been the most effective anti-poverty measure in American history. Do we really want to cut a hole in the United States' only social safety net?
