I don't know if this is the proper place but, I felt a strong urge to start a discussion in this community especially with the release on the full 11th chapter of Demian Syndrome which, I believe, really brought out the "oki mamiya-ness" of the story.

In original novel the person's roles and interaction hierarchy are more specified. You can see affecting lines clearly. Max Demian is a leader and some kind of spiritual teacher for Sinlair. His doubts and trip inside himself was finished deeply in the past. So he looks very competent and self-confident at the moment of meeting with Sinclair. He knows his way. And he is teaching Sinclair how to find this way and how to go on it. His tutoring method isn't direct sometime. Hi is older and definitly higher in position of expirience ( ... )

And as I said before, I can't to determine finally who playing the role of Demian in manga. In most of cases this is a role of Azuma but from time to time Takayama reveals signs of Demian too. For example the Azuma's impression of Takayama looks very often like Sinclair's reminiscences of Demian when he learned in private school and in university. Hesse doesn't show to us directly how Sinclair affects on Demian. It doesn't mean that he doesn't. It's simply beyond the book ( ... )
