I have this issue all the time. Like can I still enjoy watching Robin Hood when I know Errol Flynn was a Nazi? Yes, but I do hiss "Nazi creep" as I do so.
I'd probably lose my taste for reading an author if I actually met them and found them unpleasant. I don't think you need to have a moral absolute rule as much as an instinctual feel.
I find this a lot in the people I've written about. Three men who were big sports heroes turned out to be some of the worst fathers you can imagine. People idolized them. Would they have felt differently if they knew them personally? I think it's a good thing to keep in mind, in general, as we make people into heroes. Once you know both the good and the bad about someone, then you've got something to think about.

I think if I find the art and fall in love with it, I can continue to love the art...but I might hate the artist. Which means, in turn, that if I find out something truly negative about the artist before I see the art, I may be difficult to win over as a fan. It wouldn't be impossible, just unlikely, I think.
*off to jam to a Britney Spears tune* ;)
