Writer's Block: The Beatles

I was under the impression that the Beatles were considered Rock, not pop. I'm playing with semantics perhaps, but "Pop" does not mean "Popular" music anymore. When the Beatles are grouped with Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones in terms of sound and impact on the world, they shouldn't be classified in the same genre as the Backstreet ( Read more... )

But what you need to understand is that pop culture is always shifting. Pop is just a generalized term for what was popular at the time so in that case The Beatles were technically pop.

What I was trying to say is that it's no longer that way. For example, modern art is a specific style. It is not what is new and modern, which is why we are experiencing post modern art.
I understand that when the term was first coined that it referred to what was popular at that time. However now, pop is a style of music. The Beatles were popular or "Pop" back then, but now they are classic rock and Britney Spears is Pop.

Techinically the Beatles aren't either, they're Pop Rock. So they're both.
