Lame pun. sorry. Our Alaskan counterparts live on a research vessel during the summer field season. The heli drops you in remote forests to look at lichens and such. If you're lucky, the fog won't prevent it from retrieving you; I had to bivouac with them one year and it sucked incredibly hard. But the crew have to rough it like that regularly. ( Read more... )

My ex has been on a great many research vessels (mostly NSF and NOAA). A lot of them have gourmet food (not his). I guess they figure that they keep crews longer if the food is good.

The gingerbread ship is fantastically cool!

Heh yeah that makes sense! Imagine being trapped with crappy food! Seems like a fun life from a short-term perspective. I bet it'd get old fast
