I, erm, don't know if this rant was directed at me as I just left a rather lengthy comment on TimeLord1's story about the Norwegian she used, but in which case I would like to apologize for upsetting you (and TimeLord1, naturally). Because I didn't mean any offense what-so-ever when I wrote my comment - she mentioned being uncertain about the Norwegian in the authors note, so I thought I might as well note what I knew while I was reviewing. In retrospect, I should have sent it as a private note, but it just didn't occur to me at the time. Can I blame it on it being nearly one A.M. where I live? But I am very sorry and I tried to make the comment private after reading this, but I'm apparently an idiot and couldn't find the setting for it.
And if I'm not the person you're mad at...then I'm sorry for taking your time with this very pointless and unnecessary message.
Not pointless and unnecessary at all! That's sweet of you to comment! This is actually more of a late-in-the-game rant at those LU or CU people on ff.net :-)
Oh! Oh, that's a bit of a relief - I have to admit I saw this rant and panicked at having upset people with my apparent reviewing incompetence. But, I managed to come up with a solution at least - I edited my comment, removing all the notes I made about the Norwegian, and sent them as a private message instead. And I have to thank you for making me aware of the fact that I was being a bit rude - it honestly didn't even occur to me that it could be seen as such!
There is a huge difference between being nice about things an being a jerk :-) clearly you are not a jerk :-) they were very obnoxious towards people I care about and I was not a happy camper (as I'm sure you can probably tell :-D)
See, this is why I'm more of a lurker on fics. My default state is 'proofreading', and I'm far enough along in my field that my default feedback setting is 'concrit', and I can be very blunt if I don't take time to plot out the review a bit. Plus, I'm guessing this doesn't apply to what you're talking about, but a lot of the quite young fanfic authors (esp. ff.net) haven't yet distinguished between person/work or criticism vs rudeness/insult.
edit: Where were you this weekend?!? I was getting accused of all sorts of crazy things! ;)
I was a ridiculous puddle of exhausted misery this weekend :-) also I started on my Christmas knitting :-) what on Earth could they EVER accuse you of??? :-P
See, you probably know how to give REAL concrit versus just...crit :-) people seem to forget the difference. Grumble grumble
Awww, sorry you were exhausted misery! Kid(s) tire you out? I don't think any crack was hatched (although some was posted, but I had nothing whatsoever to do with that!), but there were some gifs and some glomping and one or two new people. And I think I was accused of actively participating in a toy conversation. (Yeah, don't I wish!)
Oooh, knitting. Relaxing way to make presents?
I like to think so, but the academia concrit standards are quite different to fanfic concrit standards, and I have trouble turning off the academia switch... and cannot avoid being driven nuts by misspellings, etc. (so much so that when I noticed a typo during a presentation, I completely choked on the slide). But the LU/CU stuff seems to involve personal attacks (at least one I saw linked to on TL1's LJ), and that's actually beyond crit and into flaming, IMO. Straight up unconstructive crit would be 'this sucks, start over' or some such.
You know, if I could only write as easily on my papers as I do here... :P
