It's the most wonderful season of all

Halloween OUGHT to be my favorite. It's most in line with my aesthetic, my outlook, my sense of humor. And I'm not religious (I identify as agnostic at this point, when I identify as anything at all). But there's something about Christmas, y'all ( Read more... )

I think of the whole season as celebrating solstice, because even as a big agnostic, the fact that the sun starts coming back is still true.

AbSOLutely! This change is so significant and meaningful to me emotionally and mentally. I miss the sun, but at the same time I love celebrating the 'longest night' as diehard night owl.

I like this a lot.

I think living in Florida skews the importance of the solstice - or at least *I* often forget because we have so much sun all the time. Thanks for the reminder.

I'm a Christmas-loving atheist. Honestly, I feel like Christmas is so effing huge that it kind of belongs to everyone, if they want to be a part of it. I think the story of the birth of Christ is a pretty fable, and I think there's a lot to be learned from it whether you believe it to be true or not. I've gotten over my guilt of enjoying the holidays despite not being a believer.

I feel like this!

I just don't want to force other people to feel like this, too, even though I think it is an awesome way to feel. SO COMPLICATED. *grin*

My family's Jewish, so we always had Chanukah instead of Christmas. More presents, but I always kind of wanted a tree. A couple years ago I went to my then-boyfriend's house for winter break, and got to help decorate the tree (he's Buddhist agnostic and his parents are atheists). Recently my mom has started putting up colored lights inside in the winter, where the pumpkin-shaped lights go around Halloween. Still no tree, though.

I mostly like Christmas because it gives me an excuse to have my WoW character wear this. *points at icon*

A friend of mine's family was blended Jewish and Catholic and they would be a rabbi figure on top of their tree.

I've loved Christmas since I was a kid, but the last two years have been very sad for me, because for the first time since I can remember I had no one to celebrate with. My local family didn't really include me (I got a couple gifts and was invited to the formal dinner, but I couldn't participate in the "kids waking everyone up at dawn and we all open gifts together" part, which is the best part to me) and my friends have their own families. Being single and away from your immediate family kind of does suck during the holidays. I still love Christmas carols, though, and I'm hoping to record some by the end of this month. I'll send CDs to my family and upload the recordings for anyone to download, too. I suspect once I have a group of friends/my own family to celebrate with, I'll love Christmas whole-heartedly again.

I've spent a couple of Christmases completely alone and they have been awesome. And last year we had people over (a sort of orphan's Christmas) and it was SO GREAT. Having a group of friends definitely makes a difference.
