I've been watching a lot of South Park lately, and the show's creators really don't like liberals (as commonly defined), and said persons are often portrayed as militant crazies in the show. Now, South Park creates humor by exaggerating the odd and stupid things people do, but what I have seen and experienced elsewhere inclines me to believe that ( Read more... )

Social versus Fiscal? molysaccharine December 12 2009, 14:50:26 UTC
Yeah, I had some trouble understanding this too.

I think there are various subsets of the conservative and liberal ideologies. While it does make sense that conservatives would want less government involvement in their lives, there are also those who are socially conservative who are against social change with regards to gay marriage, vegetarianism, anti-abortion, etc and would appreciate government involvement in maintaining control over these aspects of their lives. I think this mostly ties in with religion or rather a traditional approach to the interpretation of moral ideals.

I guess you can't label someone has merely conservative or liberal anymore. Some people are fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Some are vice versa. It's not enough to classify people as liberal or conservative anymore...it's like evolution...haha, Mendelian genetics in the political arena? *shrug*

Hence the problem in using 'liberal' as a 4-letter word to denounce certain social controls ( ... )

doo bee doo. semantics + popular vernacular. I'd wager the VAST majority of those who would identify as pro-choice are also anti-abortion in the same sense. Also, you DO fit in with the crowd with your general biases and such. I'd wager we're very nearly identical in our stances on prominent issues of the day. Not sure where this militant business is coming in though.
