In light of the huge blizzard that has already incapacitated nearly half of North America, we were told that there was a very real chance that the university would be closed.

I find it incredibly fitting that, while the University of Waterloo remains open, Laurier decided to close.

For the amount of snow that was blowing about last night, there really hasn't been that much accumulation (yet?), in Waterloo at least. Staying open was disappointingly the right call.

Agreed. I could imagine people who need to use the highway having trouble, but anyone coming from within the city shouldn't have had any problems getting to campus, provided they give themselves extra time and drive extra cautiously. (Plus, if you decide to live far away from your work/school, you should know that bad weather happens, and be ready to deal with it).

Seems like the amount of snow was really hit-and-miss: more 'miss' in Waterloo. Anyone commuting from outside of KW would have done well to stay home, and everyone is understanding of that, but if it's reasonable for the bulk of the staff/faculty/students to make it to campus, we shouldn't cancel.

And, as noted in the guidelines and today's Bulletin:

"When UW does not close in inclement weather, faculty, staff and students are reminded that they are responsible for determining when weather conditions make their travel unsafe and should consider public transportation because it may well be the safest option and cleared parking spaces may be in short supply."

i.e.: if you must declare a personal snow day, so be it.

I feel your pain. UTM and UTSC closed, but St. George was open as usual!

I'm happy we stayed open. As per the university's policy, when classes are cancelled due to weather, they're rescheduled for the following Saturday... in this case, a day where I'm in a play. The matinee goes right through my only class.

Also, it actually wasn't that bad walking to campus. Sidewalks were not shovelled, but they never are in KW, since the city doesn't have sidewalk snowploughs.
