Hippie thoughts.

I was just thinking about how the United States expects other countries to dismantle their nuclear weapons programs (countries we don't like, at least...) but does not do so itself, and how other countries say that as long as the United States has nuclear weapons they need them JUST IN CASE, and the United States says that well then, if YOU have ( Read more... )

The people are not only so STUPID, but they're also scared SHITLESS of each other.

Kim Jong-Il scares me. That whole "oh, look! We have missiles, Japan!" report gave me the heebity jeebities. I mean I know they couldn't hit us, but it's sad to think of how many countries they can reach in such a sort distance.

I wouldn't be surprise if this would be another Archduke Ferdinand story at some point. Today's world is so collectively constipated that all it would take is one sharp little needle to let all the shit hit the fan.

All I have to say is I hear you. Holla. Okay that wasn't the most intelligent way to say what I meant but you get it.

I am reminded of Dr. Seuss' Butter Battle Book. I firmly believe the world would be a better place if everybody paid more attention to kiddy lit. It's all there, really.

You are right on the mark, Joe - I think we see ourselves as the parent to smaller countries simply because we're bigger and more powerful. But in the role of parent, we MUST set a good example. What are other countries supposed to do if we decide that it's okay for US to keep our arsenal but not for them? Of course they're going to rebel against the U.S., just like any teenager would against a parent who's engaging in the behavior that they want to but are forbidden to...Duh!

At the same time, I can see that if we 'dismantle' our weapons, no one would believe us, not even us. There would always be some secret stash of the world's most terrifying destruction devices and we'd go back to cold war state. Do you have weapons? Maybe. Do we? We're not saying...

Ick. But I totally agree with your point. Keep writing. ;-D

Very true. I wish the UN had more power to police US...

Nuclear weapons were created to be bigger and better as a political tool more than anything else; the kid with the biggest stick expects to be in charge.

It's a self-replicating problem. The reasoning behind keeping such weapons is Mutally Assured Destruction, or MAD. You don't fire a nuclear warhead because if you do, the same deal will land on your own head. Therefore the presence of such weapons (according to MAD) prevents their use. Now that is pretty mad, but so far it has proven to be true. Unfortunately, it does assume that the leaders involved are of sound mind and judgement, which isn't always the case (and I'm not just talking about Mr. Jong-Il). North Korea's attitude is indeed childish and dangerous, but from the outside I can't see that US foreign policy is helping much ( ... )
