Kim Jong-Il scares me. That whole "oh, look! We have missiles, Japan!" report gave me the heebity jeebities. I mean I know they couldn't hit us, but it's sad to think of how many countries they can reach in such a sort distance.
I wouldn't be surprise if this would be another Archduke Ferdinand story at some point. Today's world is so collectively constipated that all it would take is one sharp little needle to let all the shit hit the fan.

At the same time, I can see that if we 'dismantle' our weapons, no one would believe us, not even us. There would always be some secret stash of the world's most terrifying destruction devices and we'd go back to cold war state. Do you have weapons? Maybe. Do we? We're not saying...

It's a self-replicating problem. The reasoning behind keeping such weapons is Mutally Assured Destruction, or MAD. You don't fire a nuclear warhead because if you do, the same deal will land on your own head. Therefore the presence of such weapons (according to MAD) prevents their use. Now that is pretty mad, but so far it has proven to be true. Unfortunately, it does assume that the leaders involved are of sound mind and judgement, which isn't always the case (and I'm not just talking about Mr. Jong-Il). North Korea's attitude is indeed childish and dangerous, but from the outside I can't see that US foreign policy is helping much ( ... )
