I don't see how it's vastly different than the torah true imposing all sorts of non-kashrut rules as a condition for certification such as no gender mingling at the pizza store, chas ve-shalom.
Strict kashrus is kept primarily by the Orthodox who are not going buy food certified only by Magen Tzedek There is no food certified only by Magen Tzedek. Its creators made it clear that Magen Tzedek certification will only be provided in addition to an existing supervision.
The frum organizations are, as always, concerned that the non-Orthodox are going to get their foot in the door of the multi-billion kosher industry.
Love your blog and the stuff you bring up. I had no idea about this hechscher and kindness to animals is something near and dear to my heart. I have long been disgusted by the Orthodox's pretense at kashrut, ignoring the plight of animals. I will look for this Conservative hechsher now. Thanks so much.
Maybe they are worried about overwhelmed mothers like this:

I think you can imagine the rant of the kosher mother confronted with ethical demands on top of regular kosher ones. It goes something like this:
"My daughter went to the LIBRARY.
She got out a BOOK.
It was all about the FOOD INDUSTRY.
Now she will not eat OUR FOOD.
Chicken, eggs, meat, milk, cheese, bread, etc.
Because it is not ORGANIC AND FREE RANGE AND HIPPY-DIPPY.
She want to bake her own BREAD and make her own DESSERTS and hold hands and sing kumbaya with all the cows and chickens.
She is TWELVE.
Initially I was all in favor, but now I am getting overwhelmed. I told her tonight that she can choose two things that we will buy for her- like organic free range chicken and eggs. Or meat and deli. Or bread ingredients and cheese. And the rest she has to just accept for now and maybe we will re-evaluate in a few months.
Was that fair? Who else has dealt with this phase before? How long does it last? Do I have to start buying cases of this stuff? I do not live anywhere near a farm."
