Am I right in guessing it took some work to put this into words? I understand how it can be to have to learn to show affection, especially in ways that seem awkward. I'm not great with touching people, and I worry about invading personal space. A lot of that's been broken down both through some awesome coworkers, and caring for my grandmother as she was dying. I am grateful to people who show kindness, so I can be weak sometimes, and to those who pick up on my good intentions. I think a lot of people are sort of in-the-closet shy, and it's a hell of a barrier to friendship. Managing to get past that to any degree can be really liberating.
I had to pay attention for quite awhile before I was able to put it together. I was sitting in the patrol room this winter watching one of the others take care of his wife's clothes and his son's gear. It was such a loving gesture but also so simple. I'd just spent half the day with some friends and enjoyed every second of it; even so I couldn't imagine how they could know how much I enjoy spending time with them. I'd already started with the changes I'd mentioned above but that's when I became aware of what I was doing and that I wanted to do it.
And man do I hear you on folks who can pick up on good intentions. Being met halfway like that can make a huge difference.
