Appearance and Impression:
5'6" tall, thin as an underwear model and incredibly beautiful, Jennifer resembles nothing so much as a walking, already airbrushed, photograph of a Playboy model. Pre-airbrushed is the key, really - it's not just that she's beautiful, it's that she's unnaturally beautiful, with skin not only perfect but glowing, perfectly styled, bouncy, full-bodied dark hair, and a physique that looks like it's been photoshopped. And she knows it - quite the cosmetics queen, she's always lipglossed and mascaraed. Quite the fashion-obsessive, she's always decked out in bright colors, skin-tight clothing, miniskirts, high heeled shoes and knee-high boots. She's stunning, really. At her best.
Sometimes, though. Sometimes, the color drains from her skin, and she breaks out. Her hair goes limp, and she looks like she hasn't slept in days. Those as the days when she hasn't fed properly. On those days she's a little more bitchy than usual, too. She looks... a little sad.
Strange, though, how it never lasts long.
A witch will burn
When she's thrown into the fire.
Not her.
She'll peel and writhe, but never expire.
Powers, skills and notable belongings:
Jennifer is, one could say, a demon. Specifically, she's a succubus, and a human possessed by a demon and therefore she has all kinds of... demon powers.
First, she is immortal and largely invulnerable - when injured, she regenerates near instantaneously. She is show carving a gash in her arm which heals immediately, and later is impaled with a pole, which hurts but even so she just pulls it out and moves on with her life despite already being weakened at the time. At her healthiest, she doesn't even acknowledge physical pain, if she feels any at all.
Jennifer is also unnaturally strong, and more than capable of tearing a human being to pieces with her bare hands. And she can hover. When she's ready to feed, her eyes turn yellow and catlike, and when she actually does feed, her jaw unhinges like a snakes, but inside that mouth there are immense fangs ready to tear at flesh.
Her unnatural beauty is part of the bargain as well - while Jennifer has always been beautiful, once possessed she began to virtually glow from the inside out - her skin is perfect, her hair is perfect, she is in ever way flawless.
However, in order to keep up these abilities and retain her beauty, she must feed on the flesh of humans. Her normal tactic is to seduce a man into going to a secluded area with her, alone, at which point she consumes them and leaves their corpse behind. However, it isn't necessary that her victim be male - she does say that she goes both ways!
When she's feeding properly, she is beautiful and indestructible. When she's growing hungry, her beauty fades, her hair goes lifeless, and she can be injured much more easily and takes longer to heal.
Jennifer's been known to vomit a black mess that, as Needy put it, resembles a mix of roadkill and sewing needles. It also looks a bit like tar. This seems to happen when she eats the wrong thing, or when her system is generally jarred (getting maced in the face, for example). This is also around the time she makes literal animal noises - these screams like something out of Jurassic Park. Definitely not human.
And the sky was all violet
Want it again, but violent - more violence.
Hey, I'm the one with no soul...
One above and one below.
Personality:
Meet Jennifer and you figure she's just a normal hot teenage girl - a little bitchy, a little snarky, twisting her hair between her fingers, biting the ends. She's jailbait, really - too young to touch and too beautiful to keep your hands off of, and everyone around her knows it - so does she. But that's all right - in a certain sense. After all, every city, every town, every high school, has a girl like Jennifer Check.
(...or do they?)
As a human girl, Jennifer was insecure. Her beauty aside, she didn't have much else going for her, really - a best friend she hated sharing (and there's the irony because, really, who was the needy one, in the end?) and a big empty house. She was bright enough, but not very ambitious and lazy enough to prefer using her beauty to get guys to do her homework rather than doing it herself. And she was controlling, in that charming way where everyone thinks they want to do things and aren't just doing it because Jennifer says so. Still, Jennifer always struggled to look more in control than she really was - for all her much touted power over men, her bluster fell away when faced with the band she stalked. She used laxatives for weight control, and tarted herself up with makeup, considered cleavage her trademark.
As a demon, things began to change... a little. Still obsessed with her outer image, she's driven to maintain it through any means necessary - even cannibalism. Well, it helps that the demon piggybacking her soul has robbed her of most of her humanity, and of all of her conscience. She takes pleasure in death, cares nothing for the pain and suffering of others, and smiles behind her hair while other people cry.
But it hasn't robbed her of everything. Even as a demon-thing, Jennifer has maintained her love for her best friend (or something like love, anyway). But now, instead of manifesting through manipulation and mindgames, it's manifested through violence. She targets the boys Needy is interested in, including the boy Needy loved best. Still, there has come to be a certain coldness to everything she does, and she turns on even friends on without warning or regret.
And despite coresidence with a demon, the soul of Jennifer Check remains, to some degree, human - she shows human emotion, human sadness. Upon her "resurrection," she follows her heart back to Needy's house - she breaks down in a combination of laughter and sobs, and while she threatens to, in the end she can't bring herself to hurt the girl she loves. Later, when Low Shoulder is mentioned, Jennifer's face darkens, and toward the end of her story, she stares into the mirror, smearing foundation over her roughening skin, eyes empty, looking near tears.
Consumed by hate and guilt, she'll never retire
Too old to fix, too dead to ever acquire.
Slit wrists - talk shit - but she will never inspire
A plan to save herself, the cinnamon spider.
(I won't try... and every time I tell that lie
I live without guilt.)
Background:
Once upon a time there was a little town called Devil's Kettle - a small place named for the strange waterfall that defined its place on the map. And there, in Devil's Kettle, there lived two girls.
One, Needy - well she was the shadow. A bit of a geek, insecure, hiding behind her messy hair, her thick glasses.
The other, Jennifer, she was the sun. Let me explain.
It'd be difficult to call Jennifer Check a normal girl, exactly - she was a beauty queen, a cheerleader, an absolute babe as they say. The It Girl in high school - the girl everyone wanted to fuck or to be. Sure every school has one, but Jennifer, she was something else. Less the girl next store than the movie star next door. This made her relationship with plain jane best friend Needy strange to many people, but of course not to them. Sandbox love, as Needy said, lasts forever. So it t didn't matter that Needy grew up to be a geek while Jennifer grew up to win beauty pageants and conquer the high school social scene (often on her back) - they were best friends, as declared by their matching friendship necklaces - BFF it said, in the center of a heart.
(Then again, maybe it did matter.)
Jennifer dominated their ffriendship - Needy always watched her, though Jennifer never really watched back. And while Needy had her own life too - a boyfriend, her own interests, her own hobbies - everything would fall away the second Jennifer called. And she always did call.
For example, take the case of Low Shoulder. They were a little known indie rock band, come to Devil's Kettle to play in the town's one bar (though Jennifer called it a club, it most certainly was not). Jennifer, having looked them up on Myspace, developed a crush on their extra salty lead singer. Instructing Needy to wear something cute (nothing a loser would wear but nothing too flashy either), she borrowed a hot car and headed to the pathetic dump that passed for a club in their tiny midwestern town. Now, normally a fan wouldn't get the attention of the act, but as Jennifer would say, flash your tits and shit gets real.
True enough, but in this case... probably not a good idea. Evil was in the house that night, and set the bar ablaze. Jennifer, transfixed by the act, pulled into Low Shoulder's spell, had to be dragged out by Needy, saving her life. But only for a moment.
Outside the burning club, the band caught up with the girls and took Jennifer into their van above Needy's protests.
Slam, the doors close.
Once inside, trapped in a van with strangers (strangers with skulls on the floor of their van, no less) Jennifer became aware of her situation... or part of it. Terrified, she tried to talk her way out of what she believed was a potential gang rape, not quite realizing the truth: that the reality was even worse than her nightmare. They dragged her out to the rocks above Devil's Kettle (the waterfall, not the town), held her down, mocked her, sang to her as she struggled, laughing, finishing a verse with a brutal spray of blood - a virgin sacrifice. A trade to Satan for fortune and fame.
There, on that rock, she died.
...but not entirely.
Rewind.
Remember that little bit about her getting through the social scene at high school on her back? Not much of a virgin sacrifice without a virgin. And now the corpse of the girl came to be inhabited by a demon.
That night, Jennifer arrived at Needy's house, covered in blood and starving. She tried to eat human food - raided Needy's fridge for chicken - but found she couldn't digest it and vomited black ooze and needles all over the floor, terrifying Needy. Jennifer, a "really good friend," resisted the urge to consume her friend and fled, running into a student in the streets. He became her first victim. Full at last, strong again, Jennifer arrived at school the next day as though nothing had happened. The callous became more callous, though, and she seemed heartless, soulless.
Funny that.
From that moment on, Jennifer began murdering and consuming boys to upkeep her health and beauty. Needy, of course realized that something was strange. Can't have your best friend consumed by a demon and not notice. But it wasn't until Jennifer arrived at Needy's house that Jennifer explained her story - call it an exposition dump with a side order of near seduction - that she fully understood what had happened. Jennifer had died that night on the rocks and been replaced by something else, a melding of girl and devil, empty and tragic. After that, the two of then didn't speak so much anymore. Flash of Jennifer I the school halls, smiling and beautiful. Flash of Jennifer circling faces in her yearbook - writing yum next to the faces.
A little research montage. Needy discovered that the only way to kill a demon was a stab through the heart. Still, it's hard to kill the thing you love.
Fast forward to the night of the school dance. There, Jennifer made another move, seducing and moving to consume Needy's (exish) boyfriend, Chip. Needy felt it, knew it, realized what had happened. She tracked Jennifer and Chip to an old poolhouse that had fallen into disrepair and found Jennifer bent over Chip, pressing him against the pool walls, mouth full of blood.
A struggle ensued, more a battle of words than anything else, culminating in Chip's impaling the demon cheerleader with a pool skimmer. Injured and in need of a meal, Jennifer retreated and left Needy with the dying Chip.
As for Jennifer, well, as it turns out she just went home. It was there that Needy found her, lying on her bed and plotting her next attack.
I told you from the start just how this would end.
When I get what I want
I never want it again.
