Anon got no email. Anon is pleased and hopes to be able to enjoy the meme to it's fullest now that her inbox won't get spammed anymore (as long as people actually move their discussions here). *hoping hoping hoping*

Frankly, if we no longer have to tolerate one or two people who seem to think they have a right to constantly shout everybody else down, that is great by me too.

regarding the age issue anonymous March 11 2009, 10:32:11 UTC
Can I just float the idea that we are in a variety of countries with different consent ages. It's not a great stretch for people to be prepared to pair someone who is just below and will be legal upon their next birthday. For some people that includes Luffy and Usopp on that borderline. But for some that includes Chopper. I am deeply disturbed at having the word "paedophilia" waved around the latter when I think there is no great difference between those situations in the perception of the shippers involved.

Still, for some people and countries, it really is (fictional) pedophilia. It goes both ways; people in countries where it is considered pedophilia should remember that it isn't in some countries, and people in countries where it is not considered pedophilia should remember that it is in others. But we all share the same Internet, so I vote that everyone should just read and write what they themselves enjoy and let others have their fun. No one is forcing me to read anything against my will, so I don't care what other people ship.

What people should keep in mind here is that they are not allowed to complain about it on this meme, no matter how offended they feel. It sucks that some people feel that they have the right to do that.

I feel that being accused of liking or condoning paedophilia because my frame of reference happens to be based around a lower age of consent harms and upsets me to a greater degree than it does the person who sees a prompt they don't like and goes "ew, squick".

Which is exactly why I'm saying the squicked people should just keep it to themselves. If people could just mind their own business, you wouldn't have to feel offended. Where I'm from, kids are allowed to have sex from the day they turn 15 (with other teenagers, at least, not adults, you'd have to be over 18 for that or the adult could get thrown in jail depending on the situation). I happily ship teens, which can get weird when I'm on an American based site where that's considered underage and is forbidden. But I'm aware that others view the world differently, know that I'm not doing anything wrong according to my country's laws, and just ignore the people who can't see things my way. It's not like they have any impact on my life, after all ( ... )

anti-X fics? anonymous March 11 2009, 14:44:36 UTC
Um, I think the title is bad but I couldn't come up with anything better.

I'm curious to know what people would think of requests wherein someone wants to see a ship/situation in a negative light? An anti-ship/sitation, if you will.

Examples from the top of my head, not meant to bash any ships/characters since I like some of them myself! What if someone wants to see a fic wherein character A is worried about the Chopper/Robin age-issue and brings it up? Or A is worried about Usopp in Luffy/Usopp, simply because Luffy is the captain of the ship, i.e. Usopp's boss? Or A seriously sees Garp's treatment of Coby and Helmeppo as horrible abuse? Or maybe the requester wants to see A hating Sanji?

Those kind of fics could be interesting, but I've never requested anything like them because I'm afraid some people will attack me for bashing their favorites. Should the requests have big "you can still like what you like, this included, I just wanted to see this" disclaimers? Or...?

Opinions! Discussion!

I think all of those would be really interesting, actually. They're all situations that are valid to examine, and not really bashing-sounding (there have been much dodgier prompts on those grounds actually made and answered, in my opinion) although the RoCho example may be something of a dead horse by now. There was a request for respectful anti-pairing ships early on and people were okay with it.

(It may even be why I prefer Usopp on top with Luffy because they start off in a very unequal strength/power dynamic)

Hey, I like Luffy/Usopp a lot, but I totally see that as a valid angle to see a relationship between them as problematic (as with any Luffy/other Strawhat pairing I guess). Back on page 7, I actually requested anti-pairing fic(s) and got two fills - they were anti Nami/Sanji and Sanji/Usopp, but I was fully prepared to see anti Luffy/Usopp as well, and would probably have anticipated that angle more than anything else. (The strength issue could also be important, esp with Luffy on top - Usopp might not be able to trust Luffy to be able to hold back enough, which would freak him out, but post-Enies Lobby he might be reluctant to say so, thus making things pretty damn angsty.)

The original prompt was here if you want to see it. I think you should go for it and post whichever of those requests you most want to see. Or if you'd like to write something yourself, why not provide another reply to my old request?

...I should probably add that when I write Luffy/Usopp I don't mean to indicate anything about sexual position, initiative or anything else: it's just a shorthand for the pairing in general, and could just as well but Usopp/Luffy. (Personally I kinda think they'd switch, assuming they evenw ant to do anal in the first place.)

(digression: I think the captain/crewmate problem is bigger with Luffy and Zoro, though, despite them being much closer in physical strength: for Zoro Luffy is much more The Captain, while for Usopp he is more the Best Friend, in my very personal opinion. But it's an issue in either case./digression)

Your reasons for disliking characters. anonymous March 11 2009, 15:30:54 UTC
Most of us probably dislike one or more characters in One Piece. Little comments pop up every now and then on the meme, like "I hate Zoro!" or "I don't like Robin," and so on. It always leaves me curious and wanting to know why. As an aspiring writer I'm also interested in knowing what makes people dislike certain kinds of characters ( ... )

I think I may have said before that your reasons for liking Robin are pretty much the reasons that I like her. Heh. But you make me wonder if the fact that she "looks like a villain" and started out a villain might actually contribute to it because I doooo like villains, especially shipped with the hero. :)

I don't like Zoro much, simply because he's kind of the "straight man" which I don't find interesting. Compared to all the other quirky characters who are on hand to like, I don't see much in him that is unique or invites me to like him.

I still like some pairings with him because he becomes more interesting in the way he plays off some of the other characters.

I actually like Robin, but I agree with you on her design. I think Oda's trying too hard to make her tall, dark and sexy. Fishnets, dark clothes, garters with short skirts etc. Sometimes I feel that her design and clothes are there just to satisfy Oda's dominatrix kink. :P

My least favourite Strawhat is probably Sanji. I don't like Casanova-type characters in general, and Sanji's constant over-the-top fawning just annoys me. First it was somewhat funny but now the joke is older than dirt. Right now I like Sanji best when he's nowhere near women, just because then there's less possibilities for him to drool over them.

"Sometimes I feel that her design and clothes are there just to satisfy Oda's dominatrix kink. :P"

I feel that way too, sometimes. It would be fun and refreshing to see Robin wearing a simple t-shirt some time, but I doubt Oda will ever do that.

I totally see your point about Sanji. I've preferred him surrounded by guys since day one. Let's hope his current wacky adventures will have a positive effect on him.

Franky anonymous March 14 2009, 17:10:42 UTC
Why are people squicked by Franky? Since one anon has claimed that at least three people on this meme are squicked by him, can someone who actually is squicked explain why?

Me too. In one fandom (which is filled with cyborgs) one character who looks more or less like a ball joint doll when he takes off his shirt, has completely white eyes and is literally a walking weapon is happily shipped witt women, men and Mary Sues. I just can't help but wonder what makes Franky so special.

Me three. I can understand people not liking him as a character, but I don't see what's there to be squicked about.
