It's very late by the time you hear back from her. First message of the day arrives at 10:17pm when all of her other friends have gone to bed. "-flops-" is all she'll type into the message box, as though, at her arrival, you're meant to drop anything you might be doing to write with her

Love this. It's agonizing when you realize you're just an ear to someone, or a vehicle, or whatever. But as you say, when we know, we know, and then we must choose. I have learned in one case what my limit is.

It's sad that so many people unwittingly become doormats to so-called "friends" whose feelings they're afraid of hurting, when those same people wouldn't even care about theirs. I see this happen all the time, sometimes even to people I care about. You've really summed it up well here.
