I'm supposed to be studying right now, but I got sidetracked by an article on Haruki Murakami in TIME Magazine (August 20 issue). He's one of my favorite authors. Anyway, an excerpt:... Wherever Murakami moves as he continues his career - he says he plans on writing until 80 at least - expect his global readership to follow, even for reasons they ( Read more... )

Sputnik Sweetheart! :)

My favorite of his is the short story 'On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One April Morning' -- or something like that. Anyway, HUGHUGHUG! (Pretty useless comment, I know)

Yep, I love that piece. I think it's "On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning" but you more or less got it anyway. Haha!

NOT USELESS AT ALL. I love yr hugs! :3

It almost seems too perfectly poetic, like something out of, well, a Murakami story, but the joy that rises in Matsumura's face can't be faked. "I can hear his voice," he says. "I always find it wondrous."

Maybe I'm just extra emotional today, but that brought tears to my eyes. So sweet <3 He sounds like a great writer, I'm definitely going to check out some of his stuff.

Wasn't it so pretty? :3 I almost fell out of my chair when I read that part.

He writes anthologies, as well as novels, but if you don't have time to read those, here's a link to one of my favorite short stories that he made: On seeing the 100% perfect girl one beautiful April morning. :)

wow. for some strange reason, i've always pictured him with white hair. :)) i love the "star-crossed lovers conversation" in south of the border, when the girl was like: you think were not? hehe

Reading that article reminded me how I always feel less confident in declaring Wind-Up Bird Chronicle as Murakami's best book, simply because all the critics say so.

It's like the more the critics agree with me (or I agree with the critics) the less I'm likely to trust my own opinion, hah.

Haha, understandable as critics often have questionable taste. I haven't read that yet so I don't really have a say in it, but when I do, I think I'd like it if only because I trust yr judgement.

On the topic -- what makes you say that it's his best book? What's different about it from the other ones that he wrote?

Wow, I haven't read the book in five years now. Such a long time ago, kasi medyo early bird ako with Murakami. I'd have to flip through the book again to answer that question! I'll get back to you.
