Afro-latin drumming has a _lot_ of 3-over-2 and 6-over-4 polyrhythmic action happening, you could check that out. I've found it to be real helpful.
Peter Magadini has a couple of books that really dig deep into polyrhythms. I've looked at some excerpts but haven't really worked out of them. They're supposed to be very good though.
A couple of things that help me with this stuff is to get some number that both meters divide into, and count in _that_ meter. Like if I'm playing 3 over 4, i'd learn it by counting in 12. Of course, that means you're going to be counting in 35 to do 7-over-5 (if you ever wanted to do such a thing ...).
The other thing is to program it into a drum machine so I have an absolute reference all the time.
You like some pretty cool music. Name a few songs that you're defiantly embarassed to love.
What's your least favorite part of wedding planning?
where does experimentation cross over into wankery? Does it matter to you as a listener?
I'm guessing a lot of people don't know you're amazing with pencil and paper. Tell us about some works you're particularly proud of.
Given that most people won't listen to that crazy shit you like, what artist of that type would you recommend to the average 101.1YESFM listener that they might sincerely enjoy?
It just goes to show how willpower beats out "wrong technique" any day.0ptDecember 17 2006, 06:03:40 UTC
..good way to hurt yourself though, but if that suits your fancy by all means..
I've never seen death metal drumming with the traditional grip @_@ ..
I float between german and american match grips myself for power and for precision I use that in conjuction with the moeller 'push-pull' technique to make the drums 'do the saiks'

Oh I absolutely agree. I wouldn't want to tell those kids what to do though, since they obviously already can pull it off.

I switched to trad in 2002 and it suits me real well. I still consider myself a learner with that grip, so I want to see how far I can take it. I'm not all that comfortable playing matched any more.
It is possible. I just don't know if I could play something like those really fast blasts with it. I suspect I'd have to bounce the stick with the fingers. But that wouldn't be real loud.

What is 'do the saiks'? Sorry, unfamiliar slang ...
I use german/american with my right hand, and can do push-pull with both hands. It is a really useful technique.

Yes, that's why there's a metal genre called Porngrind. Also, note how many classical Timpanists are perverts.
