I want to buy a laptop, and Dell are doing a special at the moment: €549 for a Celeron-equipped job with 1 gig of RAM. Is it a good buy? I read once that the Celeron CPU is merely an updated Pentium I. Is that true? Will a Celeron chip be compatible with Vista when it comes out? Does that even matter?

Advice greatly appreciated...

That's a great price, but with a laptop screen size is everything (unless you are using a separate monitor) so check that out. Almost all currently produced processors will be compatible with Vista.

Wait until February next year, by which time Microsoft's new version of Windows (Vista) should be released, saving you shelling out for XP and futureproofing to a certain extent. I'd also suggest that although screen-size is quite important, keep an eye on the extra weight and power consumption that buying a larger screen entails... I'm sure you don't want a heavy radiator on your crotch.

I think a 15.4-inch screen is acceptable. Do you? I'm eager to get something soon, and not wait for Vista, as I expect it'll be full of bugs initially. I would plan to continue running XP for a year or two, by which time I should be in a position to upgrade to a suitably improved laptop, and hence the Vista OS...

This €549 offer laptop appears to have a 14.1-inch screen. That's a bit small, isn't it?

Stay away from Celeron. It's the budget version of a Pentium 3 and 4. Crappy chip....waaay crappy.

Argh! It's so hard to make a decision! They're also offering AMD Turion-equipped ones for cheapish prices, but the cheapest only comes with 256MB RAM. Looks like I'll have to spend €700 or thereabouts...

but RAM is so cheap now! i added 256mb to my laptop for only €16 (incl P&P), thanks to ebay. just make sure the maximum RAM capacity on your prospective laptop is in excess of 1gb.
