I hate feeling like "One day I will get used to this". I just don't like feeling numb to things that feel important in general. I feel like it makes me accept things rather than take steps to improve them.

Although I guess it is different in your situation where whether you're numb or not you're working towards helping those people and fixing the problem.

I work with homeless, drug addicted youth here in Portland.... and I understand the feeling. Because sometimes, when you spend a whole afternoon talking to a youth, getting to know them and they ask to walk you to your car and you let them and while you hop in and turn on the heat and pull out, on your way to dinner with friends, you're watching them curl up with a tiny blanket in a doorway. And sometimes it hurts so much. And sometimes I just feel used to it. And both make me feel sick.
