I live in st helens, its a smaller town about 30 minutes from portland and 20 from beaverton/hillsboro, we have country settings and small settings. Not a whole lot to do, but its quiet and everythin is only a short drive away!
Sounds like Eugene is the place for you. I lived there for years and LOVED it. Portland is to big for me. Now, I must say, that Eugene is a conservative town. However, there is the influence of the university coupled with a hippie tradition that goes back to the 60s. Its weather is a bit more extreme than Portland, but still maritime.
Do you mean that Eugene is conservative by comparison or on its own merits? 'Cause it doesn't really seem that conservative on its own. They are a LOT more straight laced in, say, Pendleton. :P :D
I live in Corvallis and I love it. Very nice people and it's growing, and college vibe in parts. Also pretty liberal IMO. Also within an hours drive of Salem and Eugene, near Albany, and only a couple hours from Portland.
