How bad is it going to hurt to have my gums scaled?

Slightly less than the burning fire of a thousand suns, but a little bit more than a papercut.

Quite a lot if you don't take the Novocaine ...otherwise you won't feel it until after wards. But that afterwards is a bitch. Buy ice cream.

I will most definitely take all form of chemical intervention possible, including Nitrous oxide if that is available. I am very much a mouth wimp.
I hope I can get pain meds for after :/ Gah! Stupid teeth.

Um... why do they need to be scaled? When I first read that I thought it said scalded, which sounds equally painful.

To remove tartar buildup above the gumline, which I suspect is the result of taking medication that causes dry mouth for 10+ years :/

scaling, or 'deep scaling' Deep scaling is done just below the gumline. A standard cleaning tends to get rid of the tarter at and above the gumline. If it's an option, and you have someone to take you home afterwards, opt for the sedation. If I remember correctly, what they gave me a couple years ago when I had mine done was an injection of valium or some other sedative. I kinda figuratively flew right out the window, and felt next to nothing between the sedation & the Novacaine. I second the suggestion for ice cream/soft foods afterwards. You'll be tender for a little while.

Speaking of which, I need to have it done again. :/
