The corn in the mound is definitely richer in color and taller. i was in an accident and was not able to get the squash in, but i do have pumpkins planted around the base. and my beans aren't climbing beans. i planted sunflowers close, too.

Wow, the difference between the mound and the rows is dramatic! My comrade planted oats where my corn patch was last year and you can see little mounds where the oats grew taller and darker green that I think are some of the mounds where my squash didn't germinate at all last year ( ... )

i thought the flowers were to bring bees in? there is a 4 sisters bed plan too that has bee balm (or marigolds or rocky mountain something or other)...to bring in bees

i think someone sent me this link after i already planted. but i only did one mound instead of the 25 or so. that's why i did the 2 other rows.

What I've heard about sunflowers for bird protection is for large field types of situations, where a thick row of sunflowers is planted along the edges and the birds eat the sunflower seeds instead of the main crop. If my impression is true, they probably wouldn't keep birds away in a home garden!

/Not relevant to the three sisters model, but possibly useful.

i still watch it! its actually on a cable channel. i was surprised. and its on netflix instant.
15 years later and i am still angela chase! (but with just the right amount of rayanne thrown in :)

I did the same thing this year, only in a tiny raised bed. I didn't have climbing beans (bush beans) but they climbed anyway! I just have a square 4X4 bed, 4 stalks of corn in the middle, a circle of beans around them, and then squash in the corners. It's the first time I've grown corn or beans, and they are both looking great! Good luck with yours.
