I'd never even heard of this. Other Americans really celebrate it with fireworks and stuff?

The only 'celebration' my group of friends sort-of-had-if-we-remembered-and-felt-like-it was "November 5th is 'Watch V for Vendetta' Day". Which was celebrated, I think, a grand total of once, the first year it was available on DVD to do so.

But even then, it was totally just celebrating the character V being an awesome vigilante and beating up the bad guys.

V for Vendetta kind of rang in a swathe of folks in the USA getting really worked up about it - I've seen a reasonable (unreasonable) amount of Americans over the last few years bein all OMG WE SHOULD SET OFF FIREWORKS!! etc.

but I kind of get annoyed about it to the point that seeing someone from the US posting HAPPY NOVEMBER 5TH is enough to make me want to stick a fist though my monitor

possibly this is overreacting.

Well, in our (weak) defense, we're a country that is pretty much desperate for an excuse to blow something up, and fireworks are fairly easy to acquire, even in states where they're banned (like here in NY, where even sparklers are against the law).

That's really the only excuse I have for us, heh. Well, that and we're a bunch of ignorant idiots (as a population, even if not as individuals).

I'd never really looked up the whole thing, even though I watched that movie. :|a I was just kind of like "k that was a neat movie /MOVES ON". I mean, I don't celebrate the 4th of July, since I'm Canadian, why would I celebrate other country/region-specific holidays...? Especially ones I... didn't understand fully wtf. I don't really get it, I guess.

But hey, free history lessons explained in a way I can understand are always A+, thank you.

I still can't believe that there are actually Americans who do this. I blame hipsters.

(Halloween is a perfectly good night for mischief and fireworks, people!)

Speaking of, see also: the recent (?) appropriation of Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos imagery by (largely white) hipsters.

So, out of curiosity, I wiki'd it and it says you Brits still do this thing.

So why do you guys do this big monarchical Protestant gloat after you've gotten your democratic hat on?

I was just rereading Witch Week last month! Such a fun read. (Man, there's so much weird race/class(/gender) stuff going on in that series, though.)
