Resolution and Revolution

The graffiti is stark and violent looking-- bright, poppy red with little drips down the word. Just the one word, with a slash cutting through the word it’s replacing. Simple, really.

It’s been popping up all over town, and if there’s one thing Eli’s sure of it’s that this case of sign debasement is not being tolerated. ( Read more... )

I love this. The whole act of defiance, from your narrator spray painting the word himself to him making money off cleaning it. It's great!

Yess, thank you! Often it's from within that we must operate, yes?

Hmm. This was interesting. I couldn't help but interpret this to suggest that sometimes, those who are selling us solutions to certain problems, may in fact, be just as responsible for creating the problem itself.

On a second read, I still come away with the notion that Eli, who works for the government cleaning up graffiti, also actually, moonlights as a graffiti artist. So in this way, he profits from cleaning up his own messes. He is selling a solution to problems that he has in fact, helped to create. That's not the subtext you were going for?

thanks for the clarification of what you meant! I saw it as more of a " you can only work within the system you are in" and that Eli was doing the best he could in a situation he had very little control over. but I can see how you would interpret it in a more capitalistic and manipulative manner. :) Thanks for giving you the second read!
