Kara would have loved it, she absolutely would have, but it wasn't really the right place to take the children and it wasn't so long ago she'd gone without Adhra to New York and so it wasn't the right time to be taking off again ( ... )

Harry actually would have enjoyed having Kara here. Monaco is the type of place that he thinks they would have a good time. Maybe when the kids are older he'll be able to take her properly. They can do it up properly. Take in the theater and hang out on the yacht and hit the casino and parties.

He would have really enjoyed having Kara in Monaco up until all hell broke loose. Once that happens he's relieved she's back home with the kids. That she isn't in the middle of this chaos.

The phone rings and he takes the call immediately. "Hey, Kara Marie. Are you and the girls alright?" You can never tell given it's Gotham.

They really should consider a vacation some place where the world doesn't go crazy around them. Hawaii sounds great right now.

He answers the phone, he sounds OK. He really sounds OK. She feels like she can breathe again. Of course, on cue, Coco starts to cry. She isn't impressed being woken from her comfortable sleep like that. Not impressed at all.

"I just saw it on the news, Harry."

Kara presses her lips to Coco's head.

"Are you OK? Is Tony OK? Pepper? Tony looked like he might be hurt?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. I wasn't anywhere near the track when it went down. Pepper's pretty shaken up, but physically she should be okay. Tony's banged up, but he'll be fine."

As fine as Tony can be. He's not going to see a doctor. Harry kind of wishes he had a heavy Med school book to beat Tony with, but eh his head clearly already took enough damage to his head today on the track.

"I'll be heading back to Gotham soon. Is Coco okay? I can hear her crying."

After he gets Pepper to go to sleep, and he's sure that she's comfortable in bed, Tony carefully slips out of the room. Harry is still there which, again, doesn't surprise him. Especially when he had noticed just how irritated the kid had looked earlier ( ... )

"You don't need to thank me for watching out for Pepper. She's a friend." She reminds him of his mother. Harry won't say it. There's no need to get into it. Especially since he doesn't want to know what that says about him given he's checked Pepper out more than once. He's even fantasized about her and Tony together.

But the fact remains, she reminds him so much of Emily. The little bit of Emily that he still remembers. More so of the Emily that he's heard about over the years. Kind, compassionate, strong, beautiful, and even a classy redhead.

She's also breakable. No matter how strong a person is, they reach a breaking point, and Harry can't shake the sound of Pepper's screams on that race track from his head. He can't shake seeing Tony on fire.

It's just another day with the superheroes, yeah?

"You alright?" It's a stupid question, but it's one he has to ask. Tony may lie, or maybe he's tired enough to cut through the bullshit and be honest.

Harry takes a sip of his drink and waits.

No, he almost answers. He really is not okay. He feels every bit his age, plus twenty years more. His body is failing him. His head feels as if it's going to burst open. His skin is on fire, he still feels the damn electricity shock running through him.

No, he's really not okay.

The Tony that is sitting, contemplating the glass of scotch next to him seems miles away from the one Harry had seen just days ago. But, despite the difference, he's still Tony and letting others see his vulnerability when he already feels so fucking exposed just makes him shrug.

"Just tired." it's not a lie. Drained feels like an understatement. Taking his glass, he almost downs the scotch in one shot. He's the pro, after all. Maybe it'll take away the ringing in his ears, and the migraine that is setting in.

Maybe it'll help him get rid of Pepper's screams from ringing in his ears.

For a moment it all hits him, making him wince a little, but he tries to hide it by draining his glass completely.

"...you heading back home?"

"You should rest." He looks old. Harry doesn't say it, but he thinks it. Tony looks old. Bruce looked old the last time he saw him. Everyone is being aged beyond their years. Everyone is being attacked and being blamed. It's all such a mess ( ... )
