And since I'm talking Guns N' Roses, let me mention how exactly I learnt English:

First, with New Kids On The Block. I was 11-12. I just HAD to understand what they were singing, so I spent lots of time translating their songs, and trying to make sense of the structure of the language. It was a good start, but the vocabulary was fairly limited.
