Today the PQ gave a confidence vote to Duceppe, and they promised to focus on separatism. This is a sure vote loser. I think they've decided there isnt an election soon. We've had 4 elections in 8 years (2000, 2004, 2006, 2008) and everyone expects another soon. Nobody wants one though, so I think we're going to have a couple years until the next ( Read more... )

Well I don't know much about Canadian politics. Didn't they try this back in the 90's and it failed. Also didn't Canada make a law about separation form the country?

they tried twice with dodgy referendums, neither referendum asked a clear question about separation

There is a law about separation, and it says that any part of Canada can leave, and that they need a 2/3rd majority to do so. This means Canada is fundamentally a confederation, any part can leave, while the USA is not a confederation. The Civil War decided that parts cant decide to voluntarily leave.

Thats the one thing i hated about living in Quebec for those two years (among others)...it was frustrating to hear about how much effort the provincial govt puts into a cause that isn't well recieved by the majority of the population. Plus it's crazy high taxes just to pay for it....
