martyrdom isn't fruitless - we have the world's most powerful religion (arguably) that stands as a testament to that - should we accept that jesus died for our sins (and why shouldn't we believe?).
but perhaps what one might have to reconcile with is that those "glory" days of "revolutions" past are over.
lastly, what does it matter if martyrdom fails? besides jesus, who could see the culmination of those efforts? that's what it means to live humbly for a cause. and that is precisely what these "martyrs" did...it is unfortunate that it has been spun into some fanciful political discourse for the consumption of tourist groups and visiting school groups.
revolution is primum signatum - these individuals weren't actively constructing the "revolution", they sought the means to make things "right".
