Everyone that's seen Avatar had talked about how it's super-obvious but fun. 2012 I expect to be wretched, but it's a wretched disaster movie with John Cusack!
Avatar is a wonderful film and really needs to be seen in the 3D theater, or IMAX. I don't care that the plot is obvious: it's a /good/ plot and one I don't mind seeing again. So, the animation? If we did not know for a fact that there were not 10-foot-tall blue humanoids, I'd think they used actors.
Anyone who says that they can 'spot the fakey CGI', a line I hear over and over for various things from the Internet Snark Machine, is a damn liar. Very, very soon we will move into completely photorealistic CGI for even cheaper projects and the uncanny valley will be a thing of the past forever.
2012 I enjoyed a great deal. Overwhelmingly cool effects, and I'd have gone for that alone. I enjoy /spectacle/ a great deal. This had a good story, too, and one that very much reminded me of the classic disaster pics of the 70's and 80's. Kids and dogs live, the spoiled and arrogant get their just deserts (save for one notable exception), and their is much courage and self-sacrifice coming from unexpected quarters.
