I'll Catch Up at Some Point

I've been a little AWOL because, frankly, it's the worst-case scenario: The transmission on the car, she is finished. So now I have to have the car towed back to the Land of Oak, wherein I will decide if I want to pour roughly 3 months' income into the car I already have or take the money and buy someone else's old clunker ( Read more... )

Wow. Sucktastic! I suppose the only reason to fix your car is because you basically know what problems it has and a new clunker may cost you the same as the repairs plus need secret repairs of its own.

Regardless, it isn't made of awesome.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

That's really horrible about the car but maybe that means that all your luck will be great now to balance it out. : )

Oy!

My husband and I had to make that decision about 1 1/2 years ago. You need to speak to a mechanic you trust and find out a) if the car is worth pouring money into.
Our mechanic, who didn't do transmissions, felt that our car was a really decent car and that it potentially was worth saving. (It didn't even have 100 miles at the time, so I'm not sure why the car even went!)
b) You need to find a transmission guy who has an excellent reputation - someone who specializes in it. You need to get a good warranty. Since we had an in with my dad's friend, we ended up getting 18 months - 6 months more than they normally give. But most places only gave 6 months on the transmission. So I'd consider a year warranty to be the minimum. Otherwise, it doesn't seem to pay for the cost.

We did this on a Nissan Altima (1997) and we paid nearly $2,000 for it, but we're still using it.

Okay, so I definitely spoke too soon about the beloved, cherished vehicle. And I thought I was paranoid when I figured mine knew when a certain part of the warranty was up so I could pour $$$$ into a certain bottomless pit of a vacuum.

Hopefully, you can get a thorough assessment before making the next step. I know the whole "the devil you know" adage really applies when it comes to the great unknown world of cars, so may the auto gods be kind and give you a sign. Something carved in stone?

Time for some good luck...
