It *does* get better. I promise. I myself had to take a week break from the book before picking it up again in order to regain my equilibrium.

So the upshot is: I really enjoyed the series. I don't think I'll touch New Moon again; OTOH, I will probably re-read some of the others in future (and maybe just the end of New Moon). I had some medium-sized children trying to talk to me while I was at the climax of each of the books, so I missed some of the full impact by being interrupted every half-second. The kids are still learning that, "Hold on - I'm on the last ten pages," is a warning to not interrupt unless it's important enough to risk having one's head bitten off. They have a little more empirical evidence now.
