After an infuriating class conversation I wish to know your opinion on the following...

What is art?

I art a selfish or selfless act?

Does art have a responsibility to the rest of the world, if so what is that responsibility?

Art loses its integirty when it isn't selfish. When art is created for the sake of an audience, it betrays its own worth. Anything that relies on creativity, originality, and innovation needs to be a fully personal experience. When the artist chooses to do otherwise, he usually ends up copying what has been done a million times before. There's great skill in copying, but that isn't art.

Also, if art did have a responsibility to the rest of the world, it would be to remain true to itself. Art should be something you do because your soul won't permit you to do anything else. You live and die for the sake of creating something that mirrors that potential that you feel in your hands, eyes, and mind. There's absolutely nothing selfless about that.

i absolutely agree with the above. i couldnt have said it better. art's only responsibility is to the artist themself. because the true artist will not rest until his/her dream is perfect and complete.

If I money shot you, and told you it was in the name of art- would you forgive me?

I should hope so, Jen.
