My limited experience:

- All the telcos suck, but Telstra is the only one that enables me to receive mobile calls AT MY DESK.

- Probably Vodaphone. Nobody likes Vodaphone. And Dodo is dodgy as fuck.

- See answer to question 1

- Anyone used to civilised internet is going to be angry and frustrated when they arrive in Australia - however 4G is relatively fast. My speed test shows 35mb down and around 7mb up through Telstra - and it's 1gb per $10. If I switch off 4G and use my home "broadband" - ADSL 2+ from Optus - I get a maximum of 5mb down and .5 mb up. I'm looking at going to Telstra cable next year as our area (in Inner West Sydney) is not listed in the next 5 year NBN rollout.

Check out the forums on whirlpool.net.au and check coverage maps for where you'll be staying.

I like Vodafone - I've been with them for 10 years

Amaysim is all right, and reasonably priced. Uses Optus network so dodgy out of major regional centres.
