David Mery's arresting experience

Thanks to Jane Sales for pointing this out to me. I have a colleague at Symbian called David Mery (some may remember him as an editor of .EXE magazine some years ago). David was arrested at Southwark tube station several weeks ago during the period of heightened tension following the tube bombings. Today's Guardian newspaper carries an article by

I read David's story without knowing it was David. Now I know who it is I'm doubly concerned, because I reckon the police were just going by his appearance.

I suspect that many people have their own mental images associated with keywords like "terrorist" or "suspicious person" and some of these will have been reinforced by pictures in the media. I'm sure such factors played a part in attracting their attention
