If you're cycling every day, that's most likely why you're finding it hard. Adding in the big long cycles means you're going to need at least one or two recovery days a week where you don't do any exercise at all. It's not the hard work that builds you up so much as the recovery afterwards.

I only cycle 2or 3 days a week, depending on what I'm up to in the evenings - and I always mak sure I have at least 1 recovery day between cycles. I wish that were it though.

Ah. Sorry, that was a bit presumptious of me, reading "commutes" as though it was something you did every day.

Dude, that's almost certainly me not being clear more than anything, and since you're talking to the king of presumption, no need to appologies ;)

though i totally respect you - yeah you seem to be taking all the fun out of cycling. Following an old fashioned map is much better than GSP. My gym instructors try to convince me to do the london - brighton every year, and every year i laugh....

Getting lost must have slowed you down a bit. I had the same experience the other day, foolishly followed the Swindon cycle path system and it ended up taking me two hours to do thirteen miles.
