I think I can guess which one is life changing, but I believe the other is more useful. I probably wouldn't call it life-changing either, though. Also, not writing a polemic or manifesto doesn't mean you can't have a thesis with an opinion and a point. Of course, I'm also an East Coast academic, so I'm biased; your mileage may vary.
