Magick/craft names

Or whatever you want to call them. I've seen a fair bit of snark around recently about the issue of craft names, and I'm wondering who reading this identifies with a "magick name," and if so, how did you come by it? If not, what are your reasons against the practice ( Read more... )

I have never felt the need of a "magical name." I joke with people and say you get your magical name from the first thing that works in Yahoo mail. 8o) I go by Raven in the pagan community because it is something that has clicked with me from a young name. My local pagan community knows me by that from when i was still not fully "out" and it has just stuck. All of my online names from back in '96 had Raven in it. I do not use it during any magical workings i do. I am nameless then. I have never used a refrence to myself and is why my name, Raven, is nothing more than a name which is better suited to my inner self than my birth name.

I do have another name, but mine is an anagram of some of the letters of my patron godess. Arrogant and dangerous I know, but it was chosen when I was young, as a good way of sealing a bond, and it still feels right, when I use it, which is rare.
I'm not sure about all these fluffy names, but why should you use the name chosen by your parents summarily before you had developed a mind or personality, as opposed to one which you feel better defines yourself in your own eyes?
I tend to use it as a way of representing my inner most private self, of seeing myself as seperate in a spiritual way and embracing that and then trying to reconcile my two sides. I don't feel I've explained that well, but thats how I use mine.

Within the BTW community it is common to have a craft name. Unlike the "fluffy" community, we don't share our names by plastering them all over town or the internet. Some have "public magical names" for the purpose of privacy, but I feel that my birth name will suffice just fine for that. There are lots of Daniels out there. :)

In my trad, our Craft names are only used in circle. My name and those of my coven sibs are not derived from the formula which has been suggested, but are reflective of the things which we strive for in our spiritual and mundane lives. I do feel that the creation of a magical persona is important to magical working, and I think that a magical name is a good tool.

We can only hope that these tools will one day be used for good and not evil. LOL
