I think that the quality you describe is one that one simply has to build up over time. The individuals I've known that best exhibit the ability to communicate firmly but sensitively are ones that have had kids or other positions of authority over others and have had to slowly refine their skills over time.
I often have the opposite problem: I speak my mind too brusquely and people take offense when I meant none. Perhaps we can give each other tips and then we can meet somewhere in the middle!
I do the same thing, and always have. People don't find out when I am angry or hurt, I just deal with it quietly and make compromises. I think that changing has at least something to do with the people one is around - I would like to be find some people I do not have to be afraid of hurting.
I say, speak your mind and if someone takes offense, then sweeten it up for them...that way you learn people's personal boundaries and don't feel like you are compromising so much.
