Rambling.

Browsing around on my various LJ food communities has gotten me all hepped up for Thanksgiving. Only problem is, I have a feeling that I'll be spending it with anarckid's family. This in itself isn't a bad thing, please don't misunderstand... it's not like they're horrible people or something! But, it means I will have none of the traditional comforts ( Read more... )

They'll only eat Portuguese foods, or foods that are very familiar to what they've always eaten. Plus they seem to have a repulsion to things cooked by anyone outside the family. His sister, for Christmas, always makes some sort of Italian-style dish for Mario and I, because his mother has no idea what a vegetarian eats... usually it's some sort of filled pasta with jarred sauce. And his family will eat that. So I think the fear of consuming the food of Outsiders is greater than the fear of expanding their culinary horizons.

I think you writing a cookbook is an amazing idea! You could promote it to local schools and organizations to sell as a fund-raiser. You may have to broaden the types of recipes to accomodate lots of tastes but I think it's a great idea. If you ever are interested, I know a LOT of print & fulfillment vendors you could talk to about cost.

Well it would have to remain meat-free of course, but I'm sure I could broaden it up a lil'... Cool, thanks for the offer! If I amass enough recipes to do something like that, I'll drop you a line! :oD Out of curiosity, what does this mean exactly, this "print and fulfillment" thing?

Aw... I know. I still haven't told Mom that we'll probably be at Mario's. But with his Mom being all injured and stuff, and she'll probably be home just before the holiday... He's leaning towards being with his family. We were all at Mom's last year, so it's fair, I guess. Mom would love to see you guys though, she misses you.

I'd Always eat your food. I'm up for a potluck too. Just say when...

PS I'll be joining you in the Portuguese thing... Although they always have a turkey, stuffing(FULL MEAT STUFFING ,green beans, sweet potatoes and pie. Just very portugues- they add rolls, olives, potatoes, cod fish, and those french toast thingies. I always make a main dish for me and John. They partake too. Even if it's just a little.

You know, being from Portugal and all, I certainly wouldn't expect their meal to NOT have all the traditional comforts of a Portuguese meal. But Thanksgiving is an American holiday, and a few of the traditional American comfort foods would be nice. At least your inlaws throw in the basics so it *feels* like Thanksgiving. I went to Mario's parents' for Thanksgiving one year, and they did make a turkey, along with their roasted pig. Not that I eat that of course. And I *think* she roasted some yams with the turkey. But that's it, there was nothing else even remotely Thanksgivingish. I believe I brought a nice nut-and-apple stuffing, that no one touched. Guess I'll do the same thing. Maybe I'll bring some sort of vegetable dish, too. How scared can they be of brussels sprouts?! :o| Or mashed sweet potatoes...
