Law&Order, and Etsy

All I want to do, now that my thesis has been handed in, is putter around in my pajamas, watch Law&Order, and surf the beautiful things on Etsy.

I fulfilled one of my philosophy credits by taking Logic in summer school. It was great since it was Pass/Fail, but all the If/then stuff could really wear you down. I think it only goes so far as an explanation without stories to aid understanding, so I think you are good. History shouldn't be looked at from only one point of view, anyway.
Oh, one thing, I took my summer school class at the University of Hawaii. I walked to class and enjoyed the fine mist blowing off the mountains, cooling my sun kissed skin. Was that logical?

I taught my students today Gregory Bateson's Syllogism in Grass. You might appreciate it. Next to the classic logical syllogism:

Socrates is a man
All men die
-----------------
Socrates will die

Bateson posits this:

Men die
Grass dies
-------------
Men are grass

As I told my students, although invalid as a logical proposition, it is what we call metaphor. And Bateson holds that the way we think -- mind as a continuation of evolution -- is actually more based on this kind of logic than the other, more formally accepted kind.
