Job interview-a-gogo

Well, kids. Tomorrow I have my second interview of the summer. The first was for the Census and I was hired as an operator, but turned it down for numerous reasons, low pay = not worth it, being one of them.

But now we are all sheer desperadoes and could use the cash after Pants took basically two weeks of vacation and then Shuswap-a-palooza.

I'm ( Read more... )

I don't think it's uncouth to turn it down. Especially when, as you say, it job-festival town. You could easily find something just as fun as tiny jeans. But, I think most places are offering competitive wages to suck people in. I wouldn't imagine its more than $9 an hour, though...

I think $12-13 is way beneath you! You've got a master's degree! :) You should at least have an hourly rate in the 20s. I think you should definitely sign on with a temp agency and try to get work in legal offices or special libraries to see how you like it. And also.. maybe you should be keeping your schedule free for full-time temporary work? It might be hard to work around a retail schedule. I think they'll love you at the temp agency and give you a really good rate because of your education. That's what I've been finding in my temp experience, anyway. And then there's the chance of being hired permanently, but also the ability to escape a horrible work atmosphere with no strings attached!

Oh my, people are ringing in from all over ther world! It's just that your master's degree is practical, and mine taught me how to listen critically to music. I don't think I'll be scoring an hourly rate in the $20s, but yeah, maybe more than $9 is reasonable. What kind of temp work have you been doing? Mostly offices? See, I would like to get some sort of part-time or 3/4 time position so I can volunteer in archives...I'm scared of offices though (this has been my life-long plague: not really working to get the better jobs, just taking what's there). Anyway. I'll keep you posted.

Practical schmactical! And critical thinking is practical and necessary. And so are all the abilities that got you through the master's degree, no? I sure haven't been calling on anything that I actually learned at school while at work. :) I've been in an office and I also despise offices so I feel you there. I was in the legal department at a copyright agency doing menial things, but they paid pretty well. And then they let me do other stuff that interested me. Anyway, perhaps not a ringing endorsement... but there you have it. :) But good luck!! Personally, I'm ready to go back to school..

I'm sort of going with the folks above who think you could earn more than $9/hour and that office temping might be a better way to go. But good luck with the interview! You've got nothing to lose...

Maybe good job karma is coming around. I got offered two courses today at Laurier. Unfortunately one's in Brantford, which will mean a bitchin' 1.5 hour commute each way on scary QEW. That's for a world music class. The other class will be Music from 1945-present in the Winter term on the main campus, which I've already taught. YAY!

Oh hooray!! Now that you are driving the tomato, the world is your oyster (we have a white Protege 5 which we call the tic-tac - why are Proteges so easy to nickname? What shall we call Q's? She drives it so she will now crash the BMWs)....Anyway, hooray. Finally some movement on the job front. Are you taking them? Have you thought about a move to Brantford - maybe you could teach private lessons too?

I got an email from Laurier--they're going to courier me a contract and some other info, so I'll see what it says (nobody has told me yet what this *pays*--probably around $5K, I'd guess, which is really peanuts and not enough to live on).

Q's Protege: what colour is it? Uh...Q-Bert? No idea.

I haven't thought about moving to Brantford--it's supposed to be kinda dumpy. I *had* thought about moving to Kitchener/Waterloo. I don't know. About teaching--not sure there's much of a market (anywhere) for traverso lessons, and I haven't touched my modern flute since, oh, about 1999. Which would leave me with...office temping? I don't know!
