After being ready to leave hospital after three weeks for being treated for pneumonia, legendary pin-up model BETTIE PAGE suffered a heart attack and fell into a coma on December 2nd. She passed away at 7:30 PST this evening.

She did not have an easy life by any stretch of the imagination.

No. It's hard to process that part, too, because she's always so grand and unaffected in her pictures and many of her words.

She was always taught to not be the one to "raise a fuss".

Ah, god, Bettie. You deserved so much more than you got, but at least you came (I do believe) to understand how much you meant by the end. I'm so, so damn sad.

She did have a hard time of it, but I'm so glad that for the last 2 decades of her life a new generation rediscovered her and appreciated her pin-ups and the wonderful, ecstatic and joyful spirit that shone through every picture. Because of this new interest she was able to connect with a new fan base, and see some profit from the current proliferation of her image. I was never able to meet her, but those I know who did called her a gentle southern lady who even in old age had that same million watt smile we all love.
