As much as I am not a fan of any sort of medication or additive, I might suggest melatonin. I've taken it before, a long time ago, and am looking into it again to correct my own sleeping problems. Our bodies produce melatonin when we're in REM sleep, so taking it tricks your body into thinking that it's already supposed to be in sleeping.
I don't know if it will help with the nightmares, and not being an expert I'm not sure what will, but it might help you get a few hours sleep here and there.
