Unpopular women, PS:T and Morrigan

Ladies and stuff
Shoutout for The Unpopular Woman Love Post.I know some people in fandom would ask "why is this here, why do we need to love every single woman character?" To which I would answer, "We don't, but I think the point is less liking everyone on this list and more responding to backlash and trying collectively to counteract the fact that ( Read more... )

I'm not sure I can even wade in on that post, because seeing the list of women who are construed as "unpopular" just... makes my blood boil? Not in anger at the participants, obviously, but at fandom-at-large. Because I see on there so many characters I love fiercely, and just cannot and do not want to deal with the fact that in many cases people feel strongly and bitterly different. I get respectful disagreement--I get, "hey, something about her/him just rubbed me the wrong way" or "I wasn't really engaged", that happens to all of us, but the rabid and bile-filled hate is so hard to stomach. (For instance, what the fuck, every single New Who companion who lasted more than one episode is on there, what do you even want, Doctor Who fandom? I mean other than the Doctor and the Master screwing apparently, whatever guys. And my love for Amy Pond is like. I don't know. Just oceans and oceans and oceans ( ... )

To be fair I think they're using a somewhat more liberal definition of unpopular. How stigmatized you feel for liking someone is really subjective, you know? Characters like Relena, Rinoa, Mai and Orihime are I think real obvious choices, they've been in the crosshairs a lot. However, characters like Laurie, Vanille and Suki, less so? Yes, they aren't wildly popular, and people have certainly taken issue with their characters or gone on record as disliking them, but I haven't really seen any vitriol directed at them.

I do get the distinct feeling that I'm an anomaly in the regard of adoring female characters over male ones with, at times, extreme prejudice

I said this once on my journal and the answer I got back was more or less "you are." Anamoly is pretty dependent on the company you keep but I'd say that's pretty true on LJ. Even so, there's a pocket of people like you! Do you read meganbmoore's journal? You should friend her for her love of women and vast, mindboggling media consumption ( ... )

I AM SURE YOU MEAN THIS IN A KIND WAY BUT I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOU WANT ME TO SPECIFICALLY DO.

Any on that list in particular you disagree with?

Heh, sometimes I choose not to have Morrigan in my party because there's some quests where you can just tell she's disagree with when I'm trying to build a magical friendship with her god you're so difficult sometimes Morrigan

Just give her shiny things and/or found cake later and she forgives you.

Your experience with Morrigan is much like my own. I liked Morrigan but sometimes I found her too much. Like at the deep roads, she was suggesting we use that awful golem maker on people! I was so glad there was an option to say "how about we try it on you" cause that was exactly what I wanted to tell her. She is very callous at times, I liked her as my evil bff when I did an evil run (which I struggled through a bit since in some places) than as a romance option. partially cause I did know a woman like her once and she had a messed up life so I didnt think anyone quite as cynical and dark as morrigan is someone you can be happy with. or not I anyway. I also find playing as guys in such games terribly dull. I just dont gget into it. I tried but I gave up ultra quick. So yeah, glad there is a female option. I bought a game recently called two worlds II and i was so excited about another fantasy game but you cant play as a girl ._. and furthermore the story is dumb as rocks. bioware has really spoilt me for all other games.

I just never really got the hate for female, or male, charcters in the first place. Granted there were characters I didn't like due to the way they were written as a whole, but I've never really hated a character unless I've felt that they were basically a unredeamable person in the end. Good example, the leading lady in the third Indiana Jones movie. While I didn't really enjoy her at first by the end I really didn't like her due to her greed ( ... )
