Part 1 |
Part 2 "I might come by later, I guess."
"Great! I'll have something ready by the time you get here. It's kind of a busy day--"
"I'll go another day then, if you're busy--"
"No! No, it's fine, gosh, just come. I wanna show you something."
"Okay? Then… I'll be there around 6pm, I suppose."
"I'll see you then."
"Mm."
She hung up and took a long drink from her tea mug to calm her heart. It was nearing 5pm and some people have already left. It wasn't a busy period at the office. She began packing up when someone coughed behind her. She turned to face a man in his late 20s, dressed in a smart suit.
"Fujigaya-senpai!"
"Hey, Nakatsu," he smiled gently. "Getting ready to go?"
"Yes."
"I know a good cafe nearby if you want to get dinner. I'm planning on going there today. Care to join me?"
"I, um, I have something to do now actually…"
"It's okay, I can wait. I'll meet you there at 7.30 then. I have some things to settle with the boss anyway."
"Senpai--"
"I kind of went ahead and arranged a dinner for two already," he chuckled sheepishly. "So if you don't go, it's a bit of a waste."
"…I'll try to be there."
"Great! Here's a card for the cafe--I kind of know the owner since I go there pretty often. I'll see you later."
He slipped the small card into her hand and walked into the boss's office. She scanned the card in her hand and her heart sank into the pit of her stomach. Oh she knew the place alright.
He surveyed the setup proudly. He had transformed the secluded sofa seat corner into a date location from a girl's dream within an hour. Candles, roses, everything. The musician for the night was serenading the patrons with a soft spanish lullaby. The young barista nudged him in the back with a snicker, but he couldn't care less.
Everything was in its place. He glanced at his watch. 6.03pm. She'd be here any moment now.
"Hey--Yaotome!"
He turned at the sound of his regular patron's voice, surprised.
"Fujigaya! You're not due till 7.30 are you--"
"Yeah well," Fujigaya smiled sheepishly. "I got nervous so I came here early to wait for her. Do you have my table ready yet? Oh wait--"
He caught sight of the table behind Hikaru.
"Man, this is amazing! This--This is perfect! She's gonna love this!"
"Wait, this isn't your--"
The doorbell rang again and they both turned.
She didn't quite know how to react, but she tried anyway.
"F-Fujigaya-senpai, you're here early!"
"Well you are too…"
"I--Actually I was supposed to--"
"Did you finish your errand? Well Yaotome-san here--" He gestured to Hikaru standing with a bewildered expression beside the table. "--has already set our table, so I guess no harm starting earlier right? We could do something else after this."
"Wait, senpai--"
He tugged one of the sofa seats back a little and showed her to the seat. She cast an apologetic look towards Hikaru, who looked towards Fujigaya with a forced smile.
"I'll bring out the appetizer in a moment," he turned to Kana with a curt nod. "Nice to meet you."
"Scrap the reservation for tonight," He spoke sharply to his part time cook, Yamada. "I'm doing something different."
Yamada just looked on quizzically as his boss threw on an apron a little more forcefully than necessary and started up the stoves like an expert.
"Sorry to have kept you waiting--"
She looked up from the casual conversation she had been engaged in with Fujigaya, as Hikaru laid two plates of a tantalizing pasta in front of them.
"Chef's special."
"That's… not what I ordered," Fujigaya commented.
"I'm sorry, Fujigaya-san, we ran out of some of the ingredients and my assistant didn't notice so I came up with this. Made this myself. I hope you don't mind--"
"I don't," she said quickly and picked up her fork with a smile. "Thank you."
"Enjoy."
He bowed and walked away. She had to force herself to not look at his retreating figure.
"I'll drive you home, come on."
"It's not necessary."
"I insist."
She could feel Hikaru's eyes burning into her back.
"I… Okay, thank you."
"Thanks, Yaotome, that was a great evening."
Hikaru smiled and gave a friendly wave as they stepped out of the cafe, Fujigaya's hand on the small of her back.
"Come again anytime. Always happy to help."
"Boss," Yamada asked tentatively as they cleaned up after closing time. "Where's the girl you said you were waiting for? Wasn't that table for her?"
"She said she 'might' drop by. Guess she was too busy after all."
"...Sorry, boss."
"Nah."
