Chapter 1 “What do you say to taking chances
What do you say to jumping off the edge?
Never knowing if there’s solid ground below
Or hand to hold
Or hell to pay”

Taking Chances / Celine Dion
It started with a goukon that she had originally planned on passing, because her previous relationship had just come to a rough end and she didn’t want to have to deal with people in general. All she wanted was some time alone.
A casual “Hi, Yaotome Hikaru desu. I’m Kairi’s cousin-“
“Yaotome… Hikaru-san? From that idol group?”
“Yeah, Hey! Say! JUMP.”
“O-Oh, I see. I think I’ve seen your face around. I’m Tomohiro Reika.”
“Tomohiro-san.”
And a few sheepish, toothy smiles later, she couldn’t stop herself from looking at him the entire night and laughing at every other thing he said.
He turned out to be a great friend to have, and the one person on her phone contact list with the most interesting perspectives on whatever she was doing, since he was from a completely different field. His texts came as reminders for her to smile (as if she could help it, really, most of the time she’d be chuckling before she reached the end of the text), to relax, to take a breath amidst her taxing job hunt.
Her personal source of sunshine, in a way.
She really shouldn’t have been surprised when he wanted to take things further, but she still was, simply because it sounded absurd in her head, and no matter how hard she looked she couldn’t picture their future together.
Even though she wanted to, terribly.
She gingerly removed her hand from his grasp and avoided his gaze.
“I’m sorry, was that…”
“I don’t think I can do this.”
“…If you want to take it slower, I could, but I just want you to know that I do want us to be more.”
“I don’t know.”
“Trust me,” he smiled at her offhandedly and it flipped the switch. “Give us a chance.”
He reached for her hand again. And she let him.
