it's not the bean... i mean, there are only arabica and robusta beans used - neither of which are indegenious to south america. they all originated in africa - didn't make their way into the western world until some trader was trying to get thru venice with a few bags in the late 1500's when they were getting their asses seiged by some city/state from the mainland. the beans were then smuggled to england where only a few plants (well regulated and protected) provided all the coffee in the country.... in 1772 there were over 272 coffeehouses in london alone. then someone, can't remember the bloke's name, decided to steal the main plant and voyage to the america's with it... it is to that single plant that most south american coffee plants can be attributed to. point being - it's not the beans. there are some things that make certain beans more desirable than others... BUT, it is overwhelmingly the roast that makes the coffee, not the beans. french roast is the most popular world wide - one not as dark as italian but still a
